Camino Frances from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela

Why are you walking the Camino?

I typically gather with pilgrims for a 10 am snack on the Camino and 7 pm dinner in town each day. Reminds me of Dorothy Day “we know each other in the breaking of bread, and we are not alone, there is companionship.”

Inevitably, someone will ask “why are you walking the Camino” and everyone answers, slowly. My responses –

  1. I just retired and wanted quiet time to think about the future.
  2. Draw closer to God’s love, to gain greater awareness.
  3. Slowdown, encounters others, conversation.
  4. Listen to people, accept what is offered as a gift.
  5. Have daily wonder and gratitude.

On the Camino, God has blessed me with inner quietness and contentment. I absorb the silence with meaning, beyond words. God was my favorite walking companion, not feeling the need to talk, just receive. Solitude deepens God’s presence.

I will list other pilgrim responses tomorrow!

I was a shepherd today, surrounded by 100 sheep!
Remaining Camino trail to Santiago, I’m in Fromista now (bottom of map)
Typical 10 am brunch meal
The Meseta trail was long and hot today.

Nice blog! I am a Camino addict and a friend of your brother at Sacred Heart of Mary in Boulder.

In 2022, I did the Frances route from St. Jean Pied-de-Port (the same route route you are one). It was transformative. Your blog is bringing back great memories and helping me relive the experience!

Last year, I did the Portugues Coastal route from Lisbon. Also, great.

This year, I’ll be doing the Primitivo route and the Finisterre/Muxia route.

UI suspect you have more Caminos in your future. Thanks for the blog. I’ll read them all.
