I typically gather with pilgrims for a 10 am snack on the Camino and 7 pm dinner in town each day. Reminds me of Dorothy Day “we know each other in the breaking of bread, and we are not alone, there is companionship.”
Inevitably, someone will ask “why are you walking the Camino” and everyone answers, slowly. My responses –
- I just retired and wanted quiet time to think about the future.
- Draw closer to God’s love, to gain greater awareness.
- Slowdown, encounters others, conversation.
- Listen to people, accept what is offered as a gift.
- Have daily wonder and gratitude.
On the Camino, God has blessed me with inner quietness and contentment. I absorb the silence with meaning, beyond words. God was my favorite walking companion, not feeling the need to talk, just receive. Solitude deepens God’s presence.
I will list other pilgrim responses tomorrow!
