Walking from Villafranca to Burgos was long and rewarding. I started in the dark at 6:30 am climbing the mountains outside Villafranca and ended the day in urban Burgos, walking on cement roads for too many miles. But, this is the Camino way, everyone earns their Compostella on the same trails. There are no short cuts, every mile is earned. Each pilgrim seems to have an inner peace, self pity is not part of the journey. Communal meals are the highlight of each day. Every pilgrim is kind and giving. Reminding me of Jesus saying “Give and it will be given you. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Camino Frances has 3 stages – physical, mental, and spiritual. I just finished the physical stage of the first 9 days through the Pyrenees, cold, windy, and rain through Burgos. Next, is the Mental stage of 10 days through Meseta to Irago Mountains, a long featureless and open expanse. The last part is spiritual formation through Santiago de Compostella – I expect to enjoy this section most.
