Camino Frances from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela

Social

Pilgrims are much more social than New Englanders. Perhaps, when we are thousands of miles from family and friends, walking 25 miles daily with a 20 pound pack, and blisters appearing on feet and shoulders, we reach for friendship. Three friends (I have known for 24 hours), invited me for an excellent Iberian dinner last night as I was walking aimlessly around Estella at 7 pm. Today, I walked with two other friends (known for two days) separately for an hour each, we spoke of every topic. Now, I’m drinking beer with a 73 year old French paratrooper. I love the social aspect of the Camino. No worries starting a conversation with someone sitting or walking nearby.

John, Anne Stembler here, I am enjoying your blog tremendously! However Bill must forward it to me, as my sign up evidently didn’t take, but no worries I get it just the same.
At one time I had a job as a tour guide and constantly marveled at the level of communication with my clients who had been with me for maybe 2 hours. Somehow it is easier sometimes to relate/unload/discuss issues with relative strangers who may or may not agree with you when you don’t feel threatened to conform to expectations that friends you have known for quite some time have of you.

carry on ! A great adventure!

    Anne
