I more fully understand this prayer after my first Camino walk. I was walking alone on curving stretches of road with many intersecting paths for locals to go about their day. I hadn’t seen the blue and yellow scallop shell for sometime, so I took the road leading higher, believing the path went over the nearby hill. After 200 meters, I see a man a half kilometer away waving his hands. I had no idea who he was or why he was waving to me. But, I noticed he was watching me walk further away and he wouldn’t stop waving his arms. Maybe, he is pointing me to a new direction, the Camino? So, I turn around and start walking the other way and suddenly I see the blue and yellow scallop shell pointing west instead of my northern path. Immediately, into my mind the words “thy will be done on earth” and I thought how could this man be here at this exact moment, know I was walking in the wrong direction, willingly guide me onto the correct path, and once corrected course the words “thy will be done on earth,” fill my mind? I began to think all the times God directed me along my path, course correcting as I stumbled out of bounds, only to guide me onto the right path – but, only if I was listening and paying attention to others waving their arms to guide me. We are fully blessed in life, if we only notice the holy guidance received and course correct. St Augustine wrote “our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee.” This was certainly true for me today!
