Camino Frances from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela

Camino Lesson #1

After my 6 am “Crazy Men” book club meeting, I was eager to start my daily Camino practice. The dark clouds and light drizzle wouldn’t slow me down as I had taken two days off to play golf with friends (photo below). The rain was so light, my shoes were dry the first half mile. I unrolled my rain protective gear over my backpack, learning a new skill – how smart I was to gain experience in the mist! Then the heavens opened while a speeding car splashed water from head to toes! My shoes felt as though I were walking in a pool. I headed home learning lesson #1 – stay dry, nothing good happens when your shoes, shorts and shirt are soaking wet!

My flight to Pamplona leaves in 10 days! I’m both nervous and excited to start the real Camino walk. Given the lack of road diversity in Turks & Caicos, it’s time to branch out and experience Spain! My first night hostel is in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France – https://www.giteportesaintjacques.com/. My first day walk is to Roncesvalles, about 18-19 miles from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port through the Pyrenees mountains. Should be challenging but beautiful. More to come …
